Preseason Practice Begins This Week

We’re getting closer to the start of another season! OU begins preseason practice this week on Thursday, August 4.

The Tulsa World reports that the team brings with it “expectations unfelt since 2003, the last time the Sooners began a season ranked No. 1.”

“OU is favored to assume that perch to begin 2011, for good reason. The Sooners feature Heisman Trophy contender Landry Jones at quarterback, record-setter Ryan Broyles at receiver and experience across the offensive line.

“Awards candidates Travis Lewis and Frank Alexander headline a defense that is seasoned in the secondary, at linebacker and up front.

“OU even has an All-American hopeful among its special teams in punter Tress Way.”

The article notes these position battles to keep an eye on:

  • Running back: “Bob Stoops reiterated at Big 12 Media Days that replacing DeMarco Murray will be a group project. Finch will have a role in that, as will Brennan Clay and Jonathan Miller. Freshman Brandon Williams is another possibility.”
  • Middle linebacker: “Tom Wort started the first nine games of his freshman season before giving way to Austin Box. Now he returns, with Jaydan Bird listed as the depth chart backup. Keep an eye on Corey Nelson, however. He made the biggest springtime impact on OU's defense, but just needs a place to play. He's listed behind Travis Lewis on the weak side, but Stoops admits to considering trying Nelson in the middle.”
  • Right tackle: “The position opened when Jarvis Jones tore his patella tendon last spring. Didn't it? Jones is reportedly progressing quickly, which could warrant an update on his initial late-September return. If it remains late September/early October, redshirt freshman Daryl Williams and sophomore Josh Aladenoye will battle to start against Tulsa and Florida State.”
