Tom Dienhart, a senior college football writer for Rivals.com, conducted an interview with Head Coach Bob Stoops recently. A few interesting highlights:
- On the Big 12 staying at 10 teams or expanding: “Whatever they feel. I'm sure getting to 12 would be a positive, provided it would be the right markets and people who bring more to the league. I trust our leadership in the league between presidents, athletic directors and the conference office to know what's right for us.”
- On one rule change he’d like to see: “I don't think our overtime is very fair in that it doesn't reward defense. You are giving teams the ball in field-goal range. Then it just gets down to field-goal kickers - or it can. But I feel you should have to earn the field goal, too. That's why I think the ball should be put at the 45-yard line. And you would have to earn your three points. I think it would shorten games as opposed to just trading field goals. This way, if you are playing great defense, you don't give the other team the opportunity with the field goal. You will make them earn it by gaining 10 yards or more to get into field-goal position.”
- On the possibility of ever hiring former OU offensive coordinator and Kansas head coach Mark Mangino: “In the right situation, sure.”
- On staying at OU until he’s ready to retire from coaching: “I'm only 50, so I'm a long way from that. You never know. I don't get that far out. The administration can change, family situations can dictate something, so you never know. Right now, I'm really excited about what we are doing and the direction we are going.”
