“He decided to transfer mid-term. We wish him well,” coach Bob Stoops announced after Monday's practice. That would leave the Sooners with just two tight ends on scholarship heading into next season: redshirt freshman Max Stevenson and incoming freshman Laith Harlow.
Harlow is a four-star recruit from Florida.
Update: Why did Haywood decide to leave? A follow-up article by The Oklahoman says that Paul Haywood, Austin's dad, thinks "much of why his son was unhappy is because offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson, who was Haywood's position coach his freshman year and his primary recruiter, left to be coach at Indiana after last season."
“Coach Wilson was bringing the best out in him,” Paul Haywood said. “And Austin was kind of getting used to him, and then coach Wilson went to Indiana.”
