Sooners Place Seventeen on All-Big 12 Academic Team

Seventeen OU football players “were named to the 2011 Academic All-Big 12 team,” according to an official release from the university today.

Offensive lineman Gabe Ikard was one of just six players with a 4.0 grade point average (zoology). The others who made it:

“Other first team members include Jaydan Bird (energy management), Aaron Franklin (undecided), Daniel Franklin (multidisciplinary studies), Lane Johnson (human relations), Jamarkus McFarland (human relations), Travis Lewis (human relations), Trey Millard (psychology), Corey Nelson (communication), Jimmy Stevens (energy management), Julian Wilson (undecided) and Austin Woods (management).”

“Second team members included Ryan Caro (prevention science), Brennan Clay (pre-communication disorders), David King (human relations), Michael Hunnicutt (undecided) and Nyko Symonds (undecided).”

First team members “consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA while the second team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.”

Some further details:

“To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.”
