OU’s tight end depth for next season is not looking good after Head Coach Bob Stoops confirmed at a press conference yesterday that freshman tight end Max Stevenson, who was redshirting this year, “has decided to quit football because of a torn chest muscle,” according to the Tulsa World.
In addition, Stoops said he determined that sophomore tight end Austin Haywood wasn’t going to make it back on the team after quitting earlier this year. Haywood described his decision to the Norman Transcript.
“It just came down to the point where I can’t take this anymore and I said I’m going to leave,” Haywood said. “It took a few weeks to make my decision. I had thought about it. The coaches didn’t even know. I was talking to my teammates. But it was really just my decision. My teammates wanted me to stay, but I had to do what I had to do.”
This leaves OU with one returning tight end for next season: freshman John-Philip Hughes, a preferred walk-on. Trent Ratterree and James Hanna, the other two tight ends on the roster, are both seniors this year.
The Sooners currently have two tight end commitments for next year: Laith Harlow (Godby High School – Florida) and Brannon Green (Fort Scott Community College – Kansas). Harlow recently had surgery after suffering a back injury.
