The search to fill “Oklahoma’s opening for a linebacker’s coach has heated up,” according to the Norman Transcript.
“A source close to the program confirmed that former Mississippi defensive coordinator Tyrone Nix was on campus for an interview Saturday.
“Nix has no ties to either OU coach Bob Stoops or defensive coordinator Mike Stoops, but he did work for Steve Spurrier as South Carolina’s co-defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach from 2005-07.
“Nix was the Rebels’ defensive coordinator the last four seasons, but found himself out of a job when they fired head coach Houston Nutt this season and new coach Hugh Freeze did not retain him.”
A source close to the program “told the Transcript that former Arizona defensive coordinator Tim Kish is the leading candidate for the job because of his familiarity with the defense and his relationship with Mike Stoops.”
Other possible candidates:
“Other candidates who have been mentioned by various media outlets, but haven’t been verified are: former Miami coach Randy Shannon; San Francisco 49ers linebackers coach Jim Leavitt and Michigan State linebackers coach Mike Tressel.”
