Garrett Gilbert Leaving Texas

Texas quarterback Garrett Gilbert, who “lost his starting job after two games and then had season-ending shoulder surgery, plans to transfer,” the Associated Press reports.

Gilbert “has been given an unconditional release from his scholarship to find another school.” He underwent season-ending shoulder surgery in September.

SMU’s Rivals affiliate, PonyPride.com, reported today that Gilbert was on campus for a visit.

That leaves Texas with only three quarterbacks on their roster heading into next season. Sophomore Case McCoy and freshman David Ash have been splitting time this season. The third quarterback is junior John Paul Floyd, who has played on the scout team the past two seasons. The Longhorns currently have a verbal commitment from one quarterback for their 2012 recruiting class.

Connor Wood transferred earlier this year to Colorado.
